China: The dream country for success (1)

“Rejections after rejections there was no other frustration Russian to wait for even though i have been always proud to call the place my motherland : U.K.” Kate came to China and discovered how understanding an entirely new culture, learning from people with different backgrounds can teach you a lot and help you decide on which step ahead to take.

“I don’t know about others but I have always enjoyed my first years of University, watching friends struggling to take flight in the real world is depressing but It was like I will never get there. But guess what it never lasts.. The graduation was approaching , I rack my brains to think of ways to get ahead. I knew how it feels to get out of the comfort zone I have always enjoyed heheee.. All what could make my small brain busy was: Apply for Master degree? Possibly… Look for Internship? I wished…. Search for a Job in my dream industry? Oh God what I can remember is just it was getting too  much.

Opportunities in U.K are sparse, and whatever is going should really be handed over to those who already graduated. Neither my region nor the whole Euro-zone offer much hope presently with gloomy forecasts stretching long past doomsday sorry to call it that way but I just meant graduation day. What to do, where to look? This is the question none seemed to be able to answer.

Guess what? China enters into the Game

China has been for me the land of opportunities, as either local or international companies endeavor either to breach the international Market or to gain a foothold on its successful ascent. Apart the old sites  like The Beijinger and so on.. There are new mobile Apps like Expats Express which are not only constantly posting positions but ease the recruitment process as you can directly chat with employers and directly decide on which offer sounds the best to take. The growing number of internship companies working with reputable businesses in China prove that the opportunities are there to be taken.

My life in China sparked after meeting a short young man who seemed to be just a new friend few days after I landed to China which became “my country of opportunities” from then. He gave me his name card, explained the projects he had to boost foreigners employment and I quickly gave him my number saying: “I hope you could get me a job”. Wow I never believed things would go that fast, the next day he asked for my e-mail address and then….. I saw myself stumbling upon an email detailing a program with “the aim of getting young professionals and international talents over to China, gaining hands-on experience in one of the global market’s front-runners”. I always dreamed to get out of my country but never thought about international work experience before, but realized that, in terms of getting ahead of my post-graduation competition, this was an opportunity not to be missed. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”.

The main reason that brought me was to develop a better understanding of contrasting cultures, both business and social. But let me tell you a secret: “the key to getting ahead in China is connections ”. Though obviously extremely important in the UK, making connections in China is paramount. It is how business is done, how life is led, how you are not only going to get by, but also how you will succeed. The term in mandarin is “guanxi” and there is no one word that can better describe how this concept is at the epicenter of Chinese business etiquette. Guanxi, especially in business terms, is used to describe relationships within a network of contacts. Individuals can consult this network when seeking a service or advice, needing to achieve a goal or to exert influence on behalf of another.

Guanxi is much more than networking. Western networking can end after the business dinner or the hospitality at an event. Guanxi ascends this: it is professional and personal; private and open; it is beyond social classes and societal statuses. I have guanxi with my boss, with my neighbor, and with a Chinese friend, CEO whom I met on a night out or even the shifu at the gate of the apartment where I stay.
