How to Apply for a Student Visa & a Business Visa in China?

What’s this article about?

This article is an extension to the original articles written about the new work permit system with common questions that have come up in the JobTube’s VisaTube and LawTube WeChat groups.

Below is the QR for the first two articles.

So let’s go ahead with the application for student visa and the extension for business visa in China.

How to apply for a student visa?

Individuals that wish to study full time in China must obtain a student visa. It is important to note that working with a student visa is only allowed in very few cities in China, and internship will require documents from the university and company and an official stamp from the Public Security Bureau.

The X1 visa is for studying for more than 180 days, and the X2 is for less than 180 days.

There are many agents that advertise their services for offering student visas. Some are legitimate, on behalf of schools and universities, while others make offers for “students” not to meet the student obligations to maintain the visa, such as not needing to go to class, etc, which would be illegal

Regarding the visa, in general, documents that are required are pretty simple:

  • The visa application form
  • A passport with six months or more remaining and having at least two empty pages
  • One recent passport photo
  • The admission letter
  • JW201 or JW202 form issued by the Ministry of Education

People that are applying not from their home jurisdiction may need to prove their long term reason for being in the place of application depending on the rules of the local consulate or embassy.

For visa applications in China, in general what is considered a downgrade, (e.g. work visa to student) is allowable but most other types of visas are not convertible to student visas in China.

The applicant will need to go back to the original inviter for a renewal.

How to apply/extend a business visa?

There are many agents that sell business visas for a fee, as in the same case with student visas, many people do not do what they are supposed to with such cases and it is risky because you do not know the details of the purpose that the agent gave to the government for your visit.

In general, you will need:

  • The visa application form
  • passport with six months or more remaining and having at least two empty pages
  • One recent passport photo
  • The invitation letter from the inviting party in China
  • The visa application

The invitation letter can be received from the organizer of a conference, tradeshow, or other meeting that you plan to attend. Remember that working with a business visa is illegal.

People that are applying not from their home jurisdiction may need to prove their long term reason for being in the place of application depending on the rules of the local consulate or embassy.

If you are looking to extend a business visa, then you need to go back to the inviter to help you apply for an extension.
